How Your Diary Can Improve Your Language Learning

Ciao a tutti!

I like to keep a journal. Not only does it clear my mind and keep me focused, but I’ve also found it a great way to enhance my language learning.

At the start, I would write in English and use the Italian when I knew the Italian word for what I was writing.

Later on, I would recount my day using basic Italian sentences and phrases. Again, using the English word when I didn’t know how to write it in Italian.

Oggi sono andata al supermercato.
Ho comprato il pane, il latte e il burro.

“Today I went to the supermarket.
I bought bread, milk and butter”.

Now, I can express my thoughts and feelings for pages and pages!
Is it all correct? No. Do I kill two birds with one stone? Yes.

Do you keep a journal in your target language? What do you write about?

Disclaimer: No birds were harmed in the learning of Italian.

  1. I am so glad I stumbled upon your article today! I am studying a couple of different languages, but it’s seriously never occurred to me to try writing in them before. I love learning, and I love writing, so it would be the perfect combination! As soon as I saw your post title, I felt the light bulb turn on in my head, lol.

    1. There are so many ideas out there! Learning is such an amazing process and I can’t wait to learn more about myself as a learner while I go through the process of learning Italian. Happy language learning!
